In Europe May 1 is labor day. Traditionally, all unions and left parties (Social Democrats, The Greens, The Left, The Pirates, etc), workers, employees and civil cervants gather to demonstrate. This has nothing to do with the financial crisis, the first May 1 demonstrations took place in 1919. It’s a national holiday in Europe. We demonstrate for various things (higher wages and salaries, more day care centers, etc). The unions are very strong in Germany. I myself am a member of the Journalists’ Union.
Cornelia, why the demonstration? What are the Germans thinking about the financial crisis in Europe?

Thank you for explaining, Cornelia. I thought it was some established holiday and not just a protest.
